Joint European Congress of Veterinary Pathology and Clinical Pathology (ESVP/ECVP/ESVCP/ECVCP)

European Congress of Veterinary Pathology and Clinical Pathology
This scientific meeting held from 31 August to 2 September 2023 at the Lisbon Convention Center covers topics around disease biomarkers, digital pathology, AI, forensic pathology, surveillance of animal and zoonotic diseases, fish and aquatic system’s pathology and other. It attracts more than 500 attendants from veterinary (clinical) pathology, academia, research and industry and promotes the scientific work of professionals active in the areas of veterinary functional and morphologic pathology as well as facilitates progress in the science and practice of veterinary clinical pathology.
It is the place to connect with the community and to learn more about Sysmex’ Veterinary Solutions.
Will we see you there?

Thrombocytopenia (TP) is commonly found in small animals and represents a changeling diagnostic dilemma in veterinary. In order to differentiate between a central origin (bone marrow failure) and a peripheral cause (immune-mediated TP, DIC, splenopathy, etc.), clinicians need to combine multiple tests and even perform invasive procedures (marrow sampling). The Sysmex XN-V analyzer has a specific optic-fluorescent channel for platelets (PLT-F), able to recognize and count immature platelets (recently released from the bone marrow), providing the immature platelet fraction (IPF).
In this study, we established the reference ranges for IPF (%) in healthy dogs and cats and studied IPF in animals with different subtypes of TP. IPF was significantly higher in dogs and cats with peripheral TP compared to central TP.Moreover, once pseudoTP was discarded (blood smear evaluation), highly sensitive and specific cutoff values could be established to differentiate both subtypes.
In conclusion, the use of IPF in the Sysmex XN-V analyzer can help in the differential diagnosis of canine and feline TP and guide further clinical tests, avoiding unnecessary procedures.
